John Augustus Winfield (born 1904) of Beaufort County, N.C., was a farmer and conservationist, and onetime director of the Division of Markets, United States Department of Agriculture at Raleigh, N.C. The collection includes the papers of John Augustus Winfield concerning the problems of ground-water penetration in Beaufort County, N.C., following the establishment of phosphate mines and fertilizer plants near Aurora, N.C., by the Texas Gulf Sulphur Co. This material includes correspondence with citizens and state agencies, proceedings of public hearings, resolutions, and proposed legislation.
